Tonight, I am writing my blog entry on a Mac for the very first time. It is a bittersweet thing as I am in the process of retiring my Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop which is pushing seven years in age…in computer years that makes it a relic. I’ve had several computers, both laptops and desktops, the 1720 has served as the best I’ve owned. Until the last year, I’ve had no problems with it at all. However, increasing slowness, the odd bluescreen or two (or ten), and having to rebuild it twice in as many months has moved me to rethink my technology needs.
So on a whim (actually lots of thought and research), I bought this Mac and to my surprise, its damn nice. I still defiled it by installing Windows 7 on a separate partition but only because I need Windows for work Mac’s let you install other operating systems without much issue unlike PCs. As I am writing this and in my personal life I am using the Mac OS but will use the Windows partition for anything work related. After just a few hours, I am already familiar with the Mac OS. It is so easy and I now know what all those Mac users were talking about.
The bitter part, this weekend I will repurpose my 1720, giving it new life as my daughter’s laptop. As a 5 year old she won’t worry about its slowness or care how many more times Daddy has to rebuild it. I will miss my old friend but maybe she’ll write a few good stories…
